What is freedom to you? Is it being able to go to work everyday without fear of losing your job or not being able to take care of your family? Is freedom being able to walk down your street without fear of persecution or maltreatment? Or do you base your freedom financially, being able to do whatever you want whenever you want and knowing that you don't owe anyone anything and that your financial security is in your own hands?
I happen to think freedom can be and is all of those things. I'm searching for my very own brand of freedom. I would love to wake up every day not feeling obligated to anything. I would love to wake up and not have a schedule that is made for me or stems from some sort of necessity outside of feeding my mind and creative expression. I guess that's why I admired folks such as Dennis Rodman so much when he was playing basketball or Mario Balotelli.
While both are trapped in their own way, whether it be by their own creation or by the fabrications of the life they both led or lead, the care free attittude or illusion of, that they present is seductive. To play a game that they both love, make money that can rendor them both finanically free or independent while seemingly possessing attitudes that say "to hell with the establishment", seems like the perfect situation to most. Being confident enough to blaze your own trail is a gift. One that we all posess, but also a gift that most may never realize or experience their entire life.
I'm sure that's also why I've always liked the villains in movies, comics, or cartoons. To have the gumption to do something that everyone will surely hate you for, all to serve your very own desires albeit selfish, is a show of strength and courage. How could I possibly say this you wonder? Well when you look at it from the stand point that we live in a world where everyone wants to be admired, loved, and praised, the villain chooses to forsake all such treasures.
Yeah, I'm in love with this concept of freedom but not in some pseudo hippy sort of way. I'm in love with the concept of forsaking all chains and bonds for a life in which I can feel no obligation to any sort of establishment or rule book. I guess I can't look for freedom through finances as I was told by a once wise man that I should rather be wealthy than rich because "wealth was simply having what you need when you need it!" And that can be had without millions of dollars.
From him I learned you can be rich and still not have what's important. Besides, I owe to much in medical bills to be financially independent anyway, LOL. It's gonna be a WHILE before those get paid off. I guess I shouldn't look for freedom in my every day life either. Yeah I could go out and do whatever I wanted, but we have this national rule book called the law which could take away my physical freedom and land me in jail for some offenses.
We also wait for stop lights to tell us when to stop and go. We work to make money to pay for college to get another job to make more money, stop me when you figure out the cyclical nightmare! And we vote for elected officials who don't actually do things for our best interest, take money and help out the top one percent who continue to put the blue color worker and different minority groups against one another so that we don't see that they are the real problem.
So let me see, we have just established that freedom can't come from finances or physical actions. On second thought, most of us aren't free at all. But the folks who are truly free, do you know how they got that way? You see, with all the reading and studying I've done, I've come to the conclusion that the only true way to be free, and to achieve this freedom that a select few have is by breaking through the mental barriers.
Freedom is mental, freedom is being able to transcend all mental and physical minutia to make your life what you want. It's being able to be like water, being able to take what ever form possible or being malleable no matter what situation life throws at you. To be able to flow easily no matter what container or box is put around you effectively means that you can't be contained. That's life, that's freedom, being able to flow with the energy around you and to become one.
I can't tell you that I've reached that point of enlightenment just yet, but I can tell you I'm trying. I've had but a few moments in life where everything seemed to stop around me because I managed to become one with my surroundings and just be. So alas, I keep searching, reading, studying, and learning. And with any luck, the fruits of my labor will bear themselves and I can be like water, I can be free.
